Battle of Front Royal Driving Tour

The Town of Front Royal cordially invites you to take a trip back in time to experience what the soldiers and citizens experienced on that unseasonably warm Friday of May 23, 1862. You will feel what the Confederate Troops must have felt after having to march all morning and then ordered to make a torturous ascent of over 400 feet within 1 1/2 miles. You will visit historic homes of the area where the tide of the battle flowed. Please allow at least a couple of hours for the tour. Contact the Visitor Center for information and guide books.

Belle Boyd Cottage (est. 1860) was the home of the famous Confederate spy, Belle Boyd. She visited Front Royal during the Civil War.

Experience this beautiful and historic land that was originally surveyed by George Washington. There are one million acres in this forest expanding over three states, with 400 trails and 190,000 acres close to Front Royal.

Ivy Lodge Museum

Formerly the Davis Roy House (est. 1825) and Samuels Public Library (est. 1952), the Ivy Lodge presently houses a museum, gift shop and the Warren County Heritage Society's offices.

The archives is named after a local historian and includes genealogical and historical documents from Warren County and the Town of Front Royal. The Warren Heritage Society runs this wonderful treasure. There is a nominal fee for non-members of the Warren Heritage Society for archival research. It is FREE for members.

Historical Main Street is lined with many historcial buildings where many unique shops and restaurants have opened up. There is a parking area for your convenience with many benches and trees for your comfort. The Visitor Center can be very helpful in answering any questions you may have about Main Street.

Serving 4-H groups in 19 counties in the northern region of Virginia and the Shenandoah Valley. In addition the facility is open to the public daily and offers a conference center for business and organizations.

Prospect Hill Cemetery

At the entrance to the cemetery is the Mosby Monument. This monument, erected in 1899, commemorates the lives of seven John S. Mosby's Rangers who were executed in Front Royal in September of 1864. General Grant, who was frustrated by the daring raids made by Mosby's Rangers in the Northern Shenandoah Valley, issued the order to immediately hang any of Mosby's men who were captured. The seven men commemorated on this monument died as a result of the order. On a circular lot at the top of the hill, known as Soldier's Circle, lay the remains of 276 soldiers representing each of the thirteen states of the Confederacy. From this hill, Stonewall Jackson directed his troops during the Battle of Front Royal on May 23, 1862.

The Park is accessed by Skyline Drive, which traverses 105 miles along the Blue Ridge Mountains. The Park features beautiful views of the Shenandoah Valley to the west and the rolling Piedmont of Virginia to the east and many activities.

The North and South Forks of the Shenandoah River meet at Riverton, Virginia, west of Front Royal in Warren County. The River offers calm waters for a leisurely canoe ride and rapids ideal for kayaking. Boating, rafting and tubing are also popular. Several local outfitters provide everything from equipment rental to guides to help you along the way.

Skyline Caverns

Discovered in 1937, the Skyline Caverns, located near the Northern Entrance to the Skyline Drive and Shenandoah National Park, is one of the only places in the world that features a unique formation known as Anthodites, "Orchids of the Mineral Kingdom."

Skyline Drive is not just a road, it is an experience. It's the only road through the Shenandoah National Park and it winds through 105 miles of the Park along the Blue Ridge Mountains.

The Visitor Center is located in the old Southern Railroad Train Station on Main Street. The Station was built in the 1890s by the Virginia Midland Railroad, which later became part of the Southern Railway System. In the early 20th Century, as many as six passenger trains a day came into the Front Royal Station. The Visitor Center offers free brochures, discount tickets to the Skyline Caverns, information on local attractions, Front Royal merchandise available for sale and a small museum. Open 7 days a week.

Warren County Courthouse

The Warren County Courthouse was constructed in 1936 on the site where the original courthouse was built 100 years earlier. Monuments on the courthouse lawn are dedicated to county residents who fought in the nation's wars, beginning with the Civil War.

Warren Heritage Society

The Society was first orgainized in 1971 as a local history project. Their mission: "to create and enhance an awareness of Warren County heritage through preservation and education". The Society's first project was the Festival of Leaves, which can now be enjoyed each year on historical Main Street in the month of October. The Society operates The Ivy Lodge, Belle Boyd Cottage and The Laura Virginia Hale Archives.

The Warren Rifles Confederate Museum was founded and is currently operated by the Warren Rifles Chapter of the Daughters of the Confederacy. The museum contains an excellent collection of relics and records of the War Between the States.
