The General's Wine & History Trail

In 2009 ten wineries banded together to form a new type wine trail experience. The new wine trail experience was to tie our rich wine heritage with our rich historical heritage and thus the General's Wine & History Trail was born.

Chateau O'Brien at Northpoint is situated hilltop directly off of Interstate 66, in the historic community of Markham, Virginia. The winery committed to handcrafting wines of distinctive elegance and power that are reflective of the lustrous and diverse character of the Northpoint territory. We specialize in limited production of powerful, yet well balanced red wines and chardonnays with classic aromas, rich texture, accents of French oak, and lingering flavors of ripe fruit.

Visitors to Philip Carter Winery are invited to view a replica of the 1762 gold medal presented to the Carter family by the Royal Society of the Arts, UK, in recognition of "the first spirited attempt at making fine wine in America."  On display in the Winery's Cleve Hall, visitors can read the historic document signed by Royal Governor Francis Fauquier certifying that the Carter family was the first in America to successfully produce wine from European vines.  We invite you to enjoy our premium wines that are produced in honor of Mr. Carter’s dream for Virginia begun roughly 250 years ago.
